is there anyone you believe would give up their life for you? [family/non-family]

Ohhh… Heavy question

I think I’m going to elect to skip the Sunday School answer of “Jesus died for me.” Not because it isn’t important, or that it doesn’t need to be said, but because I don’t think that was the intent of the question. I think it was more addressing the people in my life now.

I’ve always sorta pondered this question myself… Would I personally give my life for one of my friends or family?

The following includes spoilers from: The Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter.

Yea, I’m going to ruin two of the most popular book series ever written. So what?

I always imagine this decision taking place on a really high cliff inside a super hot volcano… like the scene from Lord of the Rings where Frodo gets his finger bit off in Mordoor. Some crazy sadistic man with a gun tells me “ I’m going to drop one of your family members or friends into this volcano… UNLESS you want to volunteer to go in their place!” *evil cackle*

I’m not sure why he doesn’t decide to just shoot one of us. Apparently he’s so sick and twisted he really wants to watch someone die in a volcano.

Anyways, so I started thinking about some “I Died for you” moments and Harry Potter came to mind. (As it should in any intellectual situation.)

So Harry’s parents sacrificed themselves to save Harry and make him the chosen one and beat Voldemort. Brave, but it’s not like they really had a choice when you think about it. Voldemort was already in their house. It’s not like they were gonna leave Harry and try to bone out or anything.

How terrible of an article would that have been in the Daily Prophet the next day?

Voldemort Kills Baby, Parents Bone out, Disapparate

So I was thinking, this type of scenario only really presents itself in fantasy novels and hypothetical situations. I mean, it’s romantic in the truest sense of the word: hero saving somebody else. I don’t know how many actual scenarios would include “Ok. You can save someone, but to do so, you must die.”

So then I thought, if not in a literal sense, then can you figuratively die for someone?

Of course you can!

I remember one time as a freshman in high school, I was talking with my sister about love. I was seeking her wisdom as to how one determines whether they’re in love or not. (this may or may not have been a serious, relevant question on my part at the time.)

I asked her if it was about taking bullets or jumping into volcanoes for someone, and she kinda pointed out to me that you don’t have to literally give up your life to give up your life for someone.

Love is sacrifice.

Giving up the smallest things…. Like cheeseburgers, is a way to show someone you love them.

I’m not really sure why you’d give up cheeseburgers as a testament of devotion.

In fact, if someone loves you, they would probably buy you a cheeseburger as a testament of devotion.

But really, people will give up just about anything for someone they love.

Not so much in a “I love you so much, I think I’ll cut off my ear to show you how much.” way

but more of a “I know that having things a certain way makes you happy so I’ll give that priority over what I like.” way.

For example, it completely amazes me what parents sacrifice for their children. Money, time, a social life!

-

I mean parents don’t really have a lot of friends to hang out with… once they start a family that’s pretty much it.
Just… hanging with the kids all day. At least that’s what mine do.

p.s
if your parents have a lot of friends, I’m going to say that you’re probably the exception.

If not, well then, I guess my parents are loners.

Sorry mom, (she’s probably reading this.)

…Dad probably already knows he’s a loner.

So to answer the question, yea, I think a lot of my friends and my family would give up a little bit of their lives for me, just as I would for them.

It’s kinda what that whole love thing is all about.

It’s good to be back, life update coming soon!

You know you want to…
